Define the outcome first
Marketing metrics are useful when they answer a defined business question. Start with the outcome and then identify the observations that might support it. Reach, engagement, enquiries and sales do not describe the same stage of a customer’s journey. A higher number can be interesting without demonstrating the intended commercial change. State what the project is trying to influence and what lies outside its scope before selecting a report or dashboard.
Choose marketing metrics by the question they answer. A useful report distinguishes delivery, audience response and commercial outcome instead of combining them into one success claim that the evidence cannot support.
Set a baseline
A baseline gives the result a context. Agree the source, period and conditions used for comparison. Note missing data or changes that make two periods difficult to compare. A new offer, different audience or altered measurement method can affect the interpretation. The baseline should be understood by the people who will review the result. It is a practical reference point, not an assertion that every future change can be attributed to the project.
A marketing metrics baseline should retain its period and source. If the tracking method or offer changed, identify that change before comparing the numbers; an apparent difference may need more context than a percentage.

Attribution and exclusions
Attribution asks what contribution can reasonably be assigned to the work. External events, seasonality, client activity and other channels may influence the same outcome. Establish how those influences are treated and which claims the evidence cannot support. A reporting tool’s default model is not automatically the right commercial agreement. Make assumptions visible so that a positive change is neither ignored nor claimed too broadly. Uncertainty belongs in the explanation of the result.
For marketing metrics, write down the contribution being assessed and the influences outside the project’s control. That helps reviewers distinguish a real improvement from an unsupported claim that one activity caused all of it.
Evidence and access
Agree which reports or observations can be used and who is permitted to access them. Initial discussions need a description of the evidence, not passwords or private customer records. The project scope should establish any later information handling separately. Document enough context to understand a number without exposing unnecessary data. If an important source is unavailable or unreliable, describe the limitation rather than manufacturing a replacement or presenting an estimate as an observed result.
The marketing metrics discussion needs appropriate evidence access, not unrestricted account access by default. Describe the report or observation required, and agree how selected data can be reviewed without exposing unnecessary private information.
Reporting cadence
Choose a review cadence that allows a useful decision. Some work can be assessed at delivery; other outcomes need a period of observation. Decide who reviews the evidence, what questions the report should answer and when a corrective action is considered. A review should explain the relationship between activity and outcome, including uncertainty. Regular reporting becomes useful when it changes a decision, rather than simply reproducing a chart with a favourable label.
A review should end with a decision or a clearly stated unresolved question. Repeating a favourable chart is less useful than explaining whether the evidence supports continuing, changing or reconsidering the current scope.

Payment is a separate agreement
Measurement and payment are related decisions, but they are not identical. Pay4Result is the owner-described sister business for engagements with project-specific outcome and payment terms. That relationship does not mean every FuckAllAgencies project uses the same contract or payment trigger. Commercial conditions must be agreed for the engagement. The existence of a metric alone does not establish acceptance, responsibility or a payment obligation. Keep those commitments separate and explicit.
Separate the payment trigger from the metric itself. Acceptance, responsibilities and commercial conditions need explicit agreement, even when both parties can see the same report and recognise that a number changed.
Connect the measurement plan
Connect the measurement plan to the strategy and the brief. The objective should lead to the evidence, and the evidence should inform the next decision. If the process reveals that an outcome cannot be measured reliably, revisit the scope instead of pretending the uncertainty disappeared. Use the contact page to discuss the business question and broad evidence source. Specific targets, access and terms are established during project scoping, without guaranteed results or invented benchmarks.
Questions before the next step
What should the first brief contain?
Describe the audience, offer, intended action and the obstacle you want to understand. Include a relevant public link and important dependencies at a high level. The initial conversation should establish whether the problem and useful work are clear. Specific deliverables, access, prices and responsibilities are discussed for the engagement rather than assumed from a page.
Does AI remove human responsibility?
No. A proposed workflow needs somebody to check facts, brand requirements and consequential decisions. A generated draft is not an approved release, and a tool label does not establish a permission boundary. The AI workflows guide explains how to define inputs, outputs, review and stop conditions before describing the process as operational.
Are results or a particular contract guaranteed?
No universal outcome, fee or payment arrangement is advertised here. The measurement plan and commercial terms depend on the actual scope, evidence and responsibilities. Pay4Result is the owner-described sister business, but that relationship does not automatically apply one contract to another engagement. Discuss the applicable terms explicitly before work begins.
